What is jersey fabric?
As the name suggests, jersey fabric originates from Jersey in the Channel Islands. It’s a soft knit material originally made from wool. However, it’s now produced in many other fabrics, such as cotton and synthetic blends. As jersey is a knit fabric, it has more stretch than woven alternatives. It’s also distinctive as one-side features a smooth, single rib knit and the other loops.
This fabric is super versatile and ideal for a range of clothing and homeware items. It has numerous qualities and is:
· Stretchy
· Absorbent
· Breathable
· Soft
Caring for jersey fabric
Washing jersey is straightforward, but like other fabrics, it’s best to use a cool cycle and tumble dry on low heat if not drying outdoors. In addition, cotton jersey may shrink, so before sewing - pre-wash the fabric to ensure a great result.
