What is waterproof fabric?
Waterproof fabric is designed specifically to offer protection from water. There are several interchangeable terms used to describe waterproof materials, such as:
Water-repellent fabric – This typically describes material created using tightly packed weaves to prevent water ingress. They are also often treated with water-resistant chemicals. For example, on a water-repellent jacket, you’ll see beads of water collect on the surface, and these can be easily wiped away.
Water-resistant materials – These fabrics can hold off water for longer than water-repellent options. However, they may be less breathable due to the coating that blocks any pores in the weave.
Most waterproof fabrics are made from natural or synthetic materials and are coated with PVC, PU, rubber or wax.
Caring for waterproof fabric
To ensure your waterproof fabric keeps you dry, it’s essential to avoid using harsh detergents. Coats and jackets can usually be spot-cleaned using warm water. The same goes for outdoor furniture. Specialist products such as waterproof washing liquids and powders may also reproof the coating on your garments.
